Inevitably, a new year begins and we are all excited to get business ventures started on the right foot. Whether your venture is a new or existing side-hustle or a full time work from home situation, the best thing that you can do is to make sure the space you have to work in, is organised and clutter free. This will help you psychologically to get on with your daily tasks at hand which when performed consistently; will help you on your road to success.
Let’s begin with decluttering.
If you already have a space that you are working in; whether it is a dedicated room in your living space or a smartly placed piece of furniture in the living room, or a closet, it is best to clear out old papers not needed by throwing them away or shredding them. File away your invoices and legal documents. Accordion folders and filing cabinets are your traditional solutions. Don’t forget about organising your computer files and documentation. We can get inundated with files and e-mails. I will admit that I am guilty of downloading files to my download folder with the intent of organising the information into carefully defined file folders. I am still trying to break this habit. Something that might work for you is if you can make a conscious effort to routinely schedule these sort of declutter sessions weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or bi-yearly.
The next items to consider decluttering and maybe replacing and/or acquiring organisational solutions for these are cables and chargers, mouse pads, desk pads, writing utensils, plants, books and decorative desk objects.
Start With the Basics: Work Surfaces
There are all sorts of desk solutions available that would suit a variety of living situations.
A wall unit. Like the one shown in the feature photo of this article, this could work if you have a room that needs to do double duty. For example; if you are a vlogger or do other creative work and need one section to function as your area for posting on social media, admin work and editing and another section of the room for your creative endeavors.
Hidden work station. This is a great solution if you work from your living room. It is both stylish and functional. I have recently bought this unit second hand. I find it has been a game-changer. Everything is more accessible and files and other desk files are neatly stored under the unfolding desk. I bought some brushed silver animal drawer knobs from Melody Maison and I cannot wait to receive these in the post.

One level office desk. - Depending on whether you need a lot of working space or a little. This is a simple solution that would suit most people.
Electrical adjustable height desk. For those with back issues or maybe just want the flexibility to either work sitting down at normal height or prefer to sit at an elevated level. This Claiks electric standing desk has hooks on either side. Great for hanging your work bags, handbags and other accessories or objects.
L-Shaped Desk. A great way to have one area to work on your laptop and the other to either keep your desk organisation solutions or a cleaner surface to do other tasks.
Portable/moveable units. This is a fabulous solution that can be easily put away and suitable for small space living. This can be ideal for someone living in a tiny home or also known as a tiny house.

I wish everyone a prosperous 2025 in whatever you want to achieve. With any new venture, you want to get back to the basics and make sure you have a clean slate; which may include decluttering and re-thinking your desk situation.
In my next article we will explore a more fun home office topics such as decorative ideas and for room office spaces and some cool gadgets. Watch this space!
